Marchionne Stepping Down
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne has announced that he plans to step down at the end of 2018. That year will mark the completion of his $70 billion, five year strategic plan announced on May 6 to expand the combined automakers. Marchionne said in an interview that he plans to do something else, perhaps pursuing other interests such as theoretical physics. He said "I am not going to do any more turnarounds. I'm done; let some of the young punks do it." He has suggested that the role he fills will have to be reconfigured, possibly being split among more than one executive. While it is not an official list, there are a few names being tossed about as potential replacements for Marchionne. Some of these include Fiat's European chief Alfredo Altavilla, Jeep head Mike Manley, head of Fiat Brazil Cledorvino Belini or CNH Industrial CEO Richard Tobin. It is certain that Chairman John Elkann, a member of Fiat founding family Agnelli will not be on the list. As the company's largest shareholder, he has said that his non-executive role "has worked well" for the family. More

Chrysler's New Powertrains
At last week's Fiat Chrysler Automobiles press conference, one of the many announcements in Sergio Marchionne's five year plan for the company included it's new line-up of powertrains. This new series of engines is designed to help the automaker meet tightening global fuel economy and emissions standards. This new family of engines will replace Chrysler's range of four-cylinder engines. There are currently 40 types of these within the company, many of which share no common parts or technology with one another. Some were acquired through business ventures. The new ones will share common parts, such as pistons, combustion chamber designs and fuel injectors, and will have the ability to be customized for individual markets inexpensively. Also coming up are a series of gasoline-electric hybrids, including a plug-in version of their Chrysler Town & Country minivan, which will be the first of several new hybrid models. The company's industry-changing eight- and nine-speed transmissions will be available to more vehicles and FCA will bring more diesel engines to North America. More

Chrysler Is Committed to 9-Speed Transmission
Sergio Marchionne, Fiat Chrysler Automobile chief has gone on record saying that the company is committing to their industry-changing 9-speed transmission, despite setbacks last year caused by it. The automotive giant was forced to delay it's 2014 Jeep Cherokee by two months late last year while their engineers worked to rectify a software flaw in it's 9-speed automatic transmission. The company had a lot riding on the success of the SUV and needed to ensure that it's shiny new 9-speed, an industry first, did not disappoint. Marchionne said that the new transmission will continue to be used through Chrysler's line-up of FWD models. This transmission is also installed in the company's Chrysler 200 sedan. While the Jeep Cherokee does not use it's fuel efficient ninth gear all the time, the 200 does use it during normal operations. The operating software for it in the 200 is being refined, and the car is on track to arrive on time in showrooms, during the second quarter of this year. More

Marchionne Speaks At Toronto Auto Show
Sergio Marchionne, CEO & President of Fiat S.p.A. and of course, top guy at Chrysler addressed us media types at this year's auto show in Toronto. In his keynote speech, Marchionne first apologized for the troubles and chaos caused when the North American auto industry seemed to self destruct, requiring bailouts and bankruptcies to set itself straight again. He listed numerous mistakes made by the industry six years ago and said that they would all do a better job thanks to refinancing and reorganization. Eager to get "past the past", Marchionne then praised the direction that the auto industry is taking, as it restabilizes and is starting to show strength not seen in nearly a decade. He spoke of the industry's renewed vitality and of it's return to profitability. He pointed out that there were 1.7 million new cars and trucks sold in Canada last year, and we are on track for more this year. More
